Is Grandma in Heaven?

I have said in the past that the Seventh-day Adventist doctrine of soul sleep is central to our understanding of the heavenly sanctuary and the investigative judgment.

If it were true that Christians go straight to heaven after death then the judgement for each Christian happens immediately after death and not in 1844 when Jesus began the work of judgment in the heavenly sanctuary.

If the wicked go straight to hell after death then there is no need for the millenial judgment of the wicked or the final executive judgement that takes place when Satan and his followers are cast into the lake of fire.

If the wicked burn for eternity then it is impossible for God to bring the entire universe back to perfect order. There is no elimination of sin and suffering from creation.

The doctrine that the dead are asleep in the ground awaiting their final reward is essential to our teaching of end time events. The reason many other Christian denominations have a hard time with our view of end times events is because they do not understand the true nature of death.

The first step in teaching Adventist eschatology is making people aware the Bible teaches people do not go straight to heaven or hell at the time of death. The dead are asleep awaiting a ressurection.

The first resurrection is for those who have died with their names written in the book of life. The second ressurection is for those who have died in rebellion towards God.

“Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:6 ESV)
